Referencing the early internet days and the related fears from brick and mortar folks, Kovach uses lessons and insights from our past to help us think about our future. Getting past the hype cycle and understanding the full scope of new technology is important.

As Rules Change, How Do Marketers Evolve?

Rand Fishkin takes on the continuing evolution of content marketing, SEO, and SMM.

Rand-Fishkin-Whiteboard-Friday-October-4

As marketers, we know third-party content platforms don't love losing attention of viewers.

  • Google answers queries in the results (Google featured snippets!)
  • Social platform algorithms bias against links ("link in comments!")
  • Some social sites allow no links at all (ugh - really...)

How are we to work with these constantly changing rules?

Evolution, of course. In this #5MinuteWhiteboard, Rand Fishkin explores how we "play the game a different way."

The Case for Intellectual Loneliness

If you were born and raised in a small town, then moved to a big city for opportunity, you might get homesick sometimes.

Or if you're someone who moved from an urban center to the suburbs, you might miss the culture, the buzz, and the feel.

In both scenarios, finding the "right place" may feel impossible, leading to a sort of loneliness. Even in the middle of a fulfilling life.

The author of this essay puts it this way: So between the โ€œwe donโ€™t deserve betterโ€ and the โ€œwe are betterโ€ towns โ€” I find myself looking for a new place to live. And unfortunately it feels like there is no right answer. Itโ€™s here in this conundrum that I find myself intellectually lonely. In a drought of stimulating conversation.

If this resonates with you, this article may have some insights and connection. You are not alone.
