HubSpot Just Launched an AEO Tool. Here's What It Doesn't Tell You.

They are typing questions, getting synthesized answers, and building shortlists — all before they visit a single website. The question every marketing leader has been quietly sitting with is the same: is my brand in those answers, or not? HubSpot just gave you a way to find out. But what it gave you is a measurement — and a measurement without the right buyer intelligence behind it is just a number with a dashboard around it.

The Score Is Only as Smart as the Questions Behind It

HubSpot's new Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) tool launched today on Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise as part of HubSpot's Spring Spotlight. It tracks how your brand appears across AI platforms, measures your visibility against competitors, and surfaces the sources AI is actually citing when it answers questions in your category.

There's two things to consider:

  1. Citation consistency (when you're brand shows up) is not like the old era of SEO. A recent report from Rand Fishkin found that the answers will only show about 2% of the time (that's 1 out of every 50 queries). This means you may see some fluctuations in the findings, and that's ok.

  2. Here is what it cannot do: it cannot tell you whether you are measuring the right prompts. And that distinction is everything.

A visibility score is only as meaningful as the buyer intelligence behind the prompts that generate it. If those prompts reflect how your marketing team talks about your product — rather than how your buyers actually search for solutions — the number in your dashboard is measuring the wrong conversation entirely.
