Pinterest Launches New Search Function: 4 Things You Need To Know

Written by Remington Begg | November 20, 2015 at 1:00 PM

Pinterest is one of the most widely used social media platforms on the internet, but often overlooked by small businesses in their social media strategy. That’s unfortunate, because for many industries it can be a huge help. It’s particularly useful to those in the travel, fashion, design, or food industries. If your business falls into one of those industries, or you’re just looking to expand your digital reach, this news is for you- Pinterest has just announced a very exciting “In-Pin search” to help users pinpoint specific items and get more information on it.

As Pinterest puts it “the new in-Pin search feature is now available that allows users to focus on one element and search Pinterest for specific results on the isolated image. This allows users to choose just one portion of the original pin and get more granular detail on that item.” For a demonstration of what this In-Pin search will look like, Pinterest’s blog has a great visual. So there’s no more “What shoes is that model wearing?’” or “Where is that couch from?” This will make finding specific items in a picture much easier for users, and that’s big news for marketers.

More People Will Use Pinterest

The more user-friendly it becomes, the more people will use it, and the more they will use it regularly. The more users Pinterest gains, the more important it becomes to your social media strategy. Just like with all social media platforms, it helps with getting your name brand out there to the masses which is crucial for market saturation.

Pinterest is Keeping Up

We’ve seen a lot of big releases from other social media platforms recently, like Facebook’s new mobile profiles and Instagram’s big change to allow non-square photos. Obviously, Pinterest has been paying attention. Right now, Pinterest is still a some-what niche platform, serving mainly people looking for design, decorating, or recipe inspiration. With this move, it looks like Pinterest is looking to attract more users and expand their piece of the social media pie.

It’s Another Step Toward Mobile

If you clicked on the link above to view the official release on Pinterest’s blog, you may notice in their demonstration, it’s being shown on an iPhone. This new search function means you don’t need to actual type in the text to find something, which is very helpful to those using a mobile screen. We’ve said it before: mobile is huge. Forbes says that by 2017, 87% of connected device sales will be tablets and smartphones. Google has also previously mentioned that mobile usability is relevant for optimal search results. Obviously, Pinterest is making sure they’re keeping up with the mobile takeover.

Social Media is Evolving, Not Leaving

If you haven’t yet established a solid social media presence, you’re being left in the dust. Social media is not a passing fad; it’s here to stay and a necessary part of any small business’s marketing strategy. With every big change we see coming from a platform, it’s makes it more clear that social media as a whole is evolving with users, keeping it’s place in the digital world firmly established.
