FIG. 01

The dawn of the AI-assisted buyer

The traditional B2B buyer's journey has been fundamentally reshaped by Artificial Intelligence. Today's buyers, empowered by sophisticated AI tools, navigate a complex web of information — conducting deep, independent investigations long before ever connecting with a sales team.

This shift demands more than operational tweaks. It requires a complete rethinking of how businesses create and communicate value. Companies must now resonate not just with human decision-makers, but with the AI agents increasingly guiding their evaluation.

Sellers have always had frameworks for qualifying buyers. Buyers and AI agents have never had a formal framework for qualifying sellers. Until now.

FIG. 02

BANT qualifies buyers. CLEAR qualifies you.

For decades, BANT (Budget, Authority, Need, Timeline) has served as the cornerstone of sales qualification. It was designed to help sellers assess whether a prospect was worth pursuing. The problem is not that BANT is broken — it's that BANT was never designed to address the other side of the conversation.

When a buyer asks an AI tool to research vendors, that agent is conducting its own evaluation. It scans your website, parses your content, cross-references third-party sources, and synthesizes a recommendation. Unlike a human, it has no gut instinct. It processes signals: structured data, verifiable claims, consistent terminology, evidence.

BANT — Seller qualifies buyer
CLEAR — Buyer/agent evaluates seller
×Does this prospect have budget?
Does this vendor have credibility and clarity?
×Does this person have authority?
Does this solution offer real leverage and logical fit?
×Is there a genuine need?
Is there verifiable evidence and emotional resonance?
×Is there a defined timeline?
Is this vendor aligned with our goals and accessible for support?
×
Is this vendor responsive and relevant to our specific context?

BANT and CLEAR are not replacements for each other. They are complementary. BANT helps your sales team prioritize. CLEAR helps you understand how you are being evaluated by the buyers and AI agents on the other side of the table.

FIG. 03

Why, How, What — humans still buy in that order

Before introducing CLEAR in detail, it's worth establishing how human buyers process content. Simon Sinek's Why/How/What model maps directly to how content should be distributed across the funnel.

Why → Awareness

The mission, the belief system, the reason the company exists beyond making money. The 'Why' creates emotional resonance and earns attention. Thought leadership, industry commentary, purpose-driven messaging.

How → Consideration

Your methodology, your process, your differentiating approach. Process overviews, methodology explainers, integration architecture, workflow demonstrations.

What → Decision

Specific products, features, pricing structures, contract terms, implementation details. The What confirms whether the tangible offering matches the promise of the Why and the logic of the How.

Why/How/What is the human-language version of your value story. CLEAR is that same story translated into the structured, evidence-based language AI agents can parse. Both are needed simultaneously.

FIG. 04

Introducing CLEAR

CLEAR captures how both human buyers and AI agents evaluate a vendor across the entire journey. Five components, each evaluated differently by human researchers and AI agents. Understanding both perspectives is what makes the framework actionable.

C
Credibility & Clarity
Can the buyer trust this company, and can they quickly understand what it offers?
L
Leverage & Logic
What is the business impact, and does the solution logically fit?
E
Evidence & Emotion
Is there proof to back the claims, and does the company create genuine human connection?
A
Alignment & Accessibility
Does the company's vision align with the buyer's, and are support resources easy to access?
R
Responsiveness & Relevance
Does the company engage promptly, and is their content relevant to the buyer's specific context?
FIG. 05

The foundation. Without it, nothing else matters.

Humans seek social proof and established authority. They look for signals that the company is reliable and reputable: history, leadership credentials, awards, analyst recognition, partnerships. A first-time visitor should be able to understand your value proposition within seconds. Jargon erodes trust.

AI agents process verifiable data points. They scan for structured information, mentions in reputable sources, schema markup, semantic HTML, consistent terminology, certifications they can verify against public databases.

FOR HUMANS
  • About Us with story, mission, leadership bios
  • Awards & Recognition (ISO, SOC 2, HIPAA)
  • Partnership and integration ecosystem pages
  • Clear, benefit-oriented service descriptions
  • Consistent branding and tone across all pages
FOR AI AGENTS
  • Schema.org for Organization, Product, Service, Review
  • Logical heading hierarchy (H1, H2, H3) by topic
  • Consistent terminology across all pages
  • XML sitemap and robots.txt allowing agent access
  • Text-searchable docs (not image-based PDFs)

Off-site credibility signals

Credibility extends well beyond your own domain. AI agents and human researchers both look for consensus across multiple independent sources. AI engines cite owned websites for a very small percentage of responses — the rest comes from the broader web.

Where third-party credibility is built
  • 01Accurate, consistent listings on reputable industry directories
  • 02Reviews on G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, Google Business
  • 03Earned media and guest contributions on industry publications
  • 04Active, consistent LinkedIn profiles for your leadership team
  • 05Press releases, analyst mentions, podcast appearances
FIG. 06

What will this do for me, and will it actually fit?

Leverage asks: what will this solution do for my business? Logic asks: does the way this solution works make sense for my environment? Humans need narratives that demonstrate real-world impact. AI agents extract quantifiable data points — percentage improvements, time savings, cost reductions.

A solution that delivers great results on paper but requires ripping out existing infrastructure will face resistance. Logic is about practical fit: integrations, implementation complexity, process changes required.

FOR HUMANS
  • Solutions pages organized by industry or role
  • Use cases with problem → solution → result narratives
  • ROI calculators or frameworks for estimating return
  • Integration pages with implementation details
  • Ebooks explaining the problem space and approach
FOR AI AGENTS
  • Benefits listed with metrics in tables and lists
  • Comprehensive API and integration documentation
  • Feature lists with function + benefit summaries
  • Process descriptions with implementation steps
  • Compatibility matrices in structured formats

Off-site leverage signals

Where buyers verify your impact claims
  • 01Third-party review sites where customers cite specific results and metrics
  • 02Analyst reports that validate your category or capabilities
  • 03Community forums where users discuss implementation outcomes
  • 04Partner case studies hosted on integration ecosystem pages
FIG. 07

The most divergent evaluation between humans and agents.

AI agents prioritize verifiable proof. Humans are also influenced by how a company makes them feel. Effective digital presence serves both needs simultaneously.

Humans need case studies, testimonials, data sheets, third-party reports. They also need emotional resonance — do they feel understood? Does the company's story resonate? Even the ease of navigating your site plays a role. Frustration creates negative emotional signals.

AI agents don't experience emotion. They identify sentiment keywords and process whether language is positive, negative, or neutral — as data about human reactions, not as feelings of their own. They excel at extracting patterns across testimonials and verifying security claims.

Volume and consistency of verifiable evidence — across your site and external sources — is what strengthens an agent's confidence in your claims.

Off-site evidence signals

Where verifiable proof accumulates
  • 01Verified reviews with detailed, authentic feedback on third-party platforms
  • 02Organic social media threads where customers share experiences
  • 03Industry publications that cite your case studies or data
  • 04Reddit, Stack Overflow, Slack groups where your solution is recommended by real users
FIG. 08

Buyers aren't buying a product. They're choosing a partner.

Humans think strategically. They assess whether your vision, values, and roadmap align with their organization's long-term goals. Accessibility of support and resources directly influences purchase confidence.

AI agents identify keywords related to future development in public roadmaps. They look for structured information on support plans, SLAs, training programs. FAQ schema markup makes this especially parseable.

Surfaces that signal alignment
  • 01A 'Why partner with us' or 'Our philosophy' page
  • 02Public product roadmap (where appropriate)
  • 03Support and Customer Success pages with tiers and SLAs
  • 04Training programs, documentation, certifications
  • 05A well-organized FAQ section across all buyer stages
  • 06Active community forum or user group

Off-site alignment signals

Where long-term partnership credibility is earned
  • 01Active participation in industry communities and events
  • 02Consistent thought leadership demonstrating sustained investment
  • 03Partner ecosystem presence — app marketplaces, integration directories
  • 04Public commitments to a roadmap that customers can hold you to
FIG. 09

Does this company see me?

This is often the tipping point between a buyer who continues evaluating and one who reaches out to engage. Responsiveness in the pre-sale process is interpreted as a direct indicator of future customer service quality.

Relevance means the buyer feels the solution and approach are specifically applicable to their situation: their industry, company size, technical environment, unique challenges. Generic messaging that could apply to anyone is far less compelling than content that speaks directly to their context.

FOR HUMANS
  • Prominent, easily found contact information
  • Chatbot for basic questions, escalation for complex
  • Personalized content based on visitor behavior
  • Case studies filtered by industry or company size
  • Targeted landing pages for specific audiences
FOR AI AGENTS
  • Contact details with schema markup
  • Content segmented and tagged by industry, role, use case
  • Industry-specific and pain-point keywords in headings
  • URL structure reflecting content segmentation
  • Schema for FAQ, Service, Product entities
FIG. 10

CLEAR across the buyer's journey

CLEAR is not a one-time checklist. Different components carry more weight at different points in the journey. Here's how it maps to the funnel, integrated with the Why/How/What lens.

STAGE
HUMAN LENS
CLEAR FOCUS
NOTE
01Awareness
Why
Credibility · Relevance · Emotion · Evidence
Purpose-driven, high-level content that earns attention and emotional connection.
02Consideration
How
Leverage · Logic · Evidence · Alignment
Methodology and approach content that demonstrates differentiated value.
03Decision
What
Evidence · Alignment · Responsiveness · Credibility
Specifics — pricing, security, implementation. Reduces friction. Confronts inaction.
04Delivery
How + What
Accessibility · Responsiveness · Credibility · Leverage
Onboarding, training, support, customer success stories. Realizing the promise.

The risk of buyer inaction is real, especially at Decision. If the perceived effort of change outweighs the potential benefit, the buyer may choose to do nothing. Clear, accessible information that addresses objections directly is essential.

FIG. 11

Optimizing your digital footprint — the priority list

Implementing CLEAR requires a holistic approach to how information is structured, presented, and distributed. Here are the priority actions, organized by tier of dependency.

Foundation — structure and accessibility

The non-negotiables
  • 01Implement schema markup extensively — Organization, Product, Service, Review, FAQ, Article
  • 02Intuitive navigation with comprehensive XML sitemap and logical URL structure
  • 03Robust internal linking that mirrors your taxonomy
  • 04Make all downloadable resources text-searchable — image-based PDFs are invisible to agents
  • 05robots.txt allows AI agent access to all relevant content sections

Content — clarity and evidence

Make the value story extractable
  • 01Value proposition understandable by a first-time visitor within seconds
  • 02Back every claim with verifiable evidence — case studies, certifications, third-party validation
  • 03Comprehensive FAQs organized by buyer stage, marked up with FAQ schema
  • 04Detailed technical documentation — APIs, integrations, system requirements
  • 05Eliminate jargon; commit to consistent terminology across every page

Distribution — relevance and reach

Where your signals need to surface
  • 01Segment and tag content by industry, company size, role, and pain point
  • 02Distribute across the funnel — Why for Awareness, How for Consideration, What for Decision
  • 03Build off-site presence on review sites, communities, and earned media
  • 04Monitor digital reputation across review sites, social, and news outlets continuously

Engagement — responsiveness and alignment

Closing the loop with the buyer
  • 01Contact information prominent and structured with schema markup
  • 02Documented support structures, SLAs, and training programs in public surfaces
  • 03Vision, values, and partnership philosophy articulated in dedicated sections
  • 04Hyper-personalization based on visitor context — industry, behavior, account-level signals
FIG. 12

Your website is one node in a much larger network.

One of the most common mistakes is treating your own website as the only surface area that matters. AI engines cite owned websites for a remarkably small percentage of their responses. The majority of what AI surfaces comes from third-party sources.

Your CLEAR signals must be present not just on your own domain, but across the ecosystem of sources that buyers and AI agents consult.

Where consensus is built
  • 01Reddit, industry Slack groups, Stack Overflow — communities where buyers spend time
  • 02G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, industry-specific directories
  • 03Guest articles, press coverage, analyst mentions
  • 04LinkedIn thought leadership and X engagement
  • 05Industry-specific publications and podcasts

If your CLEAR signals only exist on your own website, you are depending on a single channel in an ecosystem where AI agents synthesize information from dozens of sources. Building off-site consensus is not optional. It is a strategic requirement.

FIG. 13

Conducting a CLEAR audit

A CLEAR audit is the practical starting point. Select a key page — homepage, primary service page, an industry solution, a case study, your About Us, your pricing page — and evaluate it through both the human and AI agent lens for each component.

  1. 01
    Select a page
A page likely to be visited by buyers or processed by AI agents.
  2. 02
    Score Credibility & Clarity
Both human (jargon, social proof, design) and agent (schema, headings, terminology).
  3. 03
    Score Leverage & Logic
Benefits with metrics; integration and process clarity; extractable formats.
  4. 04
    Score Evidence & Emotion
Linked case studies, testimonials, security; sentiment signals; schema for reviews.
  5. 05
    Score Alignment & Accessibility
Roadmap, support tiers, SLAs, FAQ schema, training programs.
  6. 06
    Score Responsiveness & Relevance
Contact methods, personalization, segmentation, schema markup.
  7. 07
    Document gaps. Prioritize.
Rate each component 1–5 on both lenses. The visible heat map is the roadmap.

The audit doesn't have to be manual. We've packaged this exact methodology into the AEO Audit app — see the pricing tiers at the bottom of this page, or sample 10 pages free with no credit card and no HubSpot account.

FIG. 14

Thriving in the AI era

The rise of the AI-assisted buyer is not a threat. It is a fundamental shift that presents new opportunities for those willing to adapt. Sellers have had BANT for decades. Buyers and AI agents have never had a formalized evaluation framework. CLEAR fills that gap, giving you the lens to understand how you are being assessed from the other side of the table.

This requires working on two tracks simultaneously. The Why / How / What lens ensures your content speaks to humans in the language of purpose, methodology, and capability — distributed strategically across the funnel. The CLEAR framework ensures that same value story is encoded in the structured, evidence-based signals that AI agents can process and validate.

Your off-site presence matters as much as your website. Build consensus across the sources that AI agents and buyers consult. Be present in communities, on review platforms, in earned media, and across the ecosystem where evaluation actually happens.

The future of growth belongs to those who understand they are being evaluated by two audiences simultaneously — and who build digital experiences designed for both.
