Answer Engine Optimization.

The page that owns the topic. Read it and you'll be able to explain AEO to your board, measure your own AI visibility, and know which fix to fund first.

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your website and content so AI answer engines cite you as a source. Where SEO earns a position on a results page, AEO earns a quotation inside the answer itself.

The mechanics are concrete: answer-first page openings, schema on every meaningful claim, consistent entity naming, and content organized around the questions buyers ask rather than the keywords they type. None of it is exotic. All of it is checkable, which is why it can be audited and scored.

DEFINITION · ANSWER ENGINE

Any system that responds to a query with a synthesized answer instead of a list of links: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, and the buyer-side agents built on them.

What is the 8% Rule?

The 8% Rule is our name for how concentrated AI citations are: a small fraction of eligible sources, on the order of eight percent, earns nearly all the citations for a topic. Everyone else is invisible, including sites that rank well.

The implication cuts both ways. Being outside the slice means buyers hear someone else's version of your category. Getting inside it is disproportionately valuable, because the slice is small and sticky: engines re-cite sources that answered cleanly before. The AEO Audit measures which side of the line each of your pages is on.

What is funnel compression?

Funnel compression is what happens when buyers do their research inside answer engines: the awareness and consideration stages collapse into a conversation you never see, and buyers arrive at your site already decided, or never arrive at all.

The old funnel assumed you'd meet the buyer early and often. Compressed funnels give you two moments: the citation inside their research, and the visit that's already a decision. AEO is how you show up at the first moment. The Surface layer is how you don't fumble the second.

Is SEO dead?

No. Search still drives real traffic, and the fundamentals SEO rewards are the same ones AEO requires: structure, speed, real answers. What's dead is SEO as the whole strategy. AEO is the second floor, built on the same foundation.

The teams in trouble aren't the ones doing SEO; they're the ones doing only SEO while their buyers' research moved into engines that don't send clicks. Rankings hold, traffic falls, and the dashboard says nothing is wrong. That gap is the most common finding in our audits.

How do you measure AI visibility?

Query the major answer engines with the questions your buyers actually ask, on a schedule, and log three things: whether you're cited, how you're described, and who's cited instead. Trend those and you have an AI visibility metric.

That's the entire instrument, and it's exactly what the AEO Audit automates: a repeatable question set, run across engines, scored per page with CLEAR. The free tier at audaeo.com gives you the topline read on your own domain today.

How does CLEAR fit?

CLEAR is the scoring framework that turns AEO from a vibe into a checklist: five dimensions, scored per page, so you know which pages fail and why. It's published in full, ungated, at the CLEAR Framework page.

Read the framework before you buy an audit, ours or anyone's. If a vendor can't tell you which dimension a page fails on, they're selling the vibe.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Faster than SEO took, for structural reasons: answer engines re-crawl frequently and re-evaluate sources per query rather than per domain authority accrued over years. Fixed pages can start earning citations within weeks. The honest caveat is variance: competitive topics move slower, and measurement discipline matters more than any single fix.

Does AEO work for niche B2B categories?

Niche categories are where it works best. Fewer credible sources means the citation slice is easier to enter, and buyer questions are specific enough that a well-structured answer wins on merit. The narrow the category, the more one legible site can own it.

Can we do AEO ourselves?

Much of it, yes. The framework is published, the audit names the failures, and answer-first rewriting is a skill your team can build. Where teams bring us in: the structural work of schema and information architecture, and the discipline of continuous measurement. Read CLEAR, run the free check, then decide.
